Every year in the United States, anywhere from two to four millions healthy pets are killed in animal shelters every year. It’s important to note that those figures do not reflect the animals that are dumped on the side of the road in a rural area or killed at home. There are many things that we can do to help rescue the animals, but everyone needs to work together in order to be successful and there is a lot to be done.
There are many individual charities that work to help specific breeds of cats or dogs from being put down. They do important work, but the best thing that can be done is for everyone who is able to, to donate time, money and energy to the shelters. The most common reasons for healthy animals to be killed at shelters are often lack of space and lack of funds.
If we, as a group, stood up and said that healthy animals should not be killed, there is the possibility for great change. If there were fewer animals in shelters, it would be not be nearly as difficult to rescue them. If you know someone who wants to adopt a pet, or if you would like to adopt a pet, consider getting one from the shelter. Every animal adopted from a shelter gives another animal a shot at life. Spaying and neutering your pets, and educating others about the low-cost alternatives for doing so, will also help rescue the animals.
